Rock Lizard

read by the author

Never move my tail though the sun bang down
Hard on this rock where my back turn brown

You lay your hand over my spine and nothing
Ever flicker even if we both still breathing

Swimming in my rock ten thousand year

If all time only a scratch on a wall
My little clawmarks, nothing at all.

Put you hand over mine, close eyes.
What size, you Sally? What size, you Jock?

A spear through your heart, and your name in chalk

Turn your eye up to the flame
That burn all time in the ghost-gum tree, and swim

Slow, slow, swim with me into my rock
Into my dream.
